PowerBI & ArcGIS (ESRI) integration

An Analysis of Opioid prescription data across the state of Virginia was done by Y Point for HQI. The analysis identified a concerning trend in opioid overuse in rural areas of Virginia. By mapping the density of opioid prescriptions, we observed a clear increase as we moved away from the population centers of Virginia. Using ESRI ArcGIS, we created multiple layers to visualize this data and were able to seamlessly integrate ArcGIs maps into PowerBI for more comprehensive analysis.

PowerBI Best Practices

Cross Filter Direction: Carefully consider the cross-filter direction when defining relationships between tables. This will impact how filters are applied to the fact table.
Relationship Types: Investigate the relationship type between tables (one-way vs. two-way). This will affect how filters are applied and affect the data that is returned.
Data Model Governance: Implement data model governance to ensure that your model is accurate, efficient, and well-maintained. This will help ensure the accuracy of your data and the success of your reporting and analysis.
Minimize Transformations: Keep transformations to a minimum by performing them in the SQL server model and loading the data into Power BI via ETL. Keep the Power BI model as similar to the model of source database as possible. Re-engineer the source database, if required.
Model Changes: When making changes to the model, be sure to test all dependent reports to ensure that they are functioning as expected.
Direct Query Sources: For high volume direct query sources, start building your reports by selecting prompt attributes. This will help ensure that filters are pushed down to the database and avoid the 1 million record cap error.
Foreign Key-Primary Key Relationships: Create the source database with foreign key-primary key relationships. Power BI will automatically detect these relationships and import them into its internal model.
Source Database Names: Use parameters for source database names to make it easier to deploy reports between development, test, and production environments.
Power BI Store: Take advantage of the PowerBI store to find the best visualization for your needs.
